NBA 2K23: 11 Huge Details You Should Know About MyNBA

MyNBA Introduces the ultimate time machine and what fans of the feature hope will be some much-needed fixes for the mode.

NBA 2K is a huge game overall. That reference isn’t just about the install size; it’s also about the layers of modes and ways to play the game.

MyCareer, MyTeam, Play Now, The City and all of its options, and then there is MyNBA and the overall franchise experience. To put it plainly and honestly, MyNBA and all of its previous names represents the best franchise mode experience in the sports video game universe.

While imperfect because of some bugs that have lingered for multiple years, there is still no other franchise mode available with as many options or that pays the homage to the history of its sport.

Madden 23 has seen some huge improvements from an options standpoint this year, but it is just now beginning to add some of the features that 2K’s franchise modes have had for years.

While I have an obvious appreciation for the MyNBA experience, I’d have to admit the mode has gone a bit stale with a lack of major additions over the past couple of years. Also, some gameplay issues have exacerbated those problems making the last cycle the only one in the past decade that didn’t see me run my annual virtual Chicago Bulls experience.

That will not be the case this year as the addition of the Eras concept and some functionality improvements may bring me back in a major way.

Here are 11 things you should know about the MyNBA mode in NBA 2K23.

Eras Offers the Ultimate Time Machine to NBA 2K Franchise Fans

The Eras concept, if executed properly, will be one of the greatest additions to a franchise mode concept we’ve ever seen.

This year, using the Eras feature, MyNBA players can choose to start their franchise mode experience in the Magic and Bird Era with play beginning in 1983. The league will have the same number of teams it did at that time, with accurate rosters (limited by the players 2K has a license to use) and you’ll have the opportunity to replay or rewrite NBA history from that point. If you don’t want to go that far back, you can choose the Michael Jordan Era and begin your experience in 1991.

Rather begin in the 21st century? You can start in the Kobe Era with your experience starting in 2002. As is the case with the revamped Jordan Challenge mode, the gameplay is era-specific, meaning there will be less emphasis on the three in earlier years and more physical play.

Hand-checking is legal in the earlier years and dribble packages will be more simplified with the exception of players who were ahead of their time like Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas.

Yes, You Can Still Play Traditional MyNBA

In case you’re wondering, you can start at the beginning of the 2022-23 season if you choose to experience MyNBA the way it has been offered for the past few years.

Start Today Feature Will Return

The Start Today feature will also return offering players an opportunity to pick-up mid season with any current NBA team once the 2022-23 season is underway.

Yes, You Can Edit Draft Classes & Roster Within the Eras Feature

2K won’t have every player who was on a roster for every season from 1983 to the present. However, as has been the case in the past in MyNBA, users will have full control to edit rosters and draft classes.

For example, if a gamer wants to create and include a player like Rasheed Wallace who has not been in the game in previous years during his draft year of 1995, you can to add authenticity. You can also inject fictional players or simply go with the 2K, historically generated rosters that match NBA Draft over the years.

Players Will NOT Visually Age

While players in Eras will age in years and ultimately retire, they will not go through a visual transformation each year. The same player model will be used for the player throughout their career.

Commentary and Presentation Will Change as Your MyNBA Rolls On

One of the biggest treats of this mode is the era-specific commentary and presentation. Mike Fratello lends his commentary for games that take place from 1983 to 2002. Fratello will be joined by Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg. In 2002, Greg Anthony will take over for Fratello. Once 2021 arrives, the current 2K commentary set up will kick in.

Presentation packages will also be era-specific with screen filters that reflect the decade as well as overlays and scorebugs consistent with the time. 2K even got the logos and branding from the eras being represented, as well as the accurate arenas from the past.

League Rules, Expansion and Relocation are Included as it Did in History

Any NBA rule changes that took place from 1983 to the present will become a parto f your league in the same year they took hold in real life. The same goes for the addition of expansion teams and relocating franchises.

Per 2K, in NBA 2K23, injuries will happen at a realistic pace in games with the following factors set to determine an injury:

• injury history
• wear-and-tear through a season
• contextual bumps and tweaks, meaning the in-game injuries should align with the sort of contact or fall that occurred in the game.

Player Progression Fixes

In NBA2K21 and 22, the player progression system had some holes. Young stars didn’t often develop to the next level, and there were other immersion breakers. Per 2K, this has been addressed ahead of the release of NBA 2K23.

MyNBA Online Stability Has Been Massively Improved, Per 2K

Last but not least, MyNBA Online has gone through a deep examination to find the bugs, legacy issues and to remedy the ongoing server issues that plague the mode at some or throughout the release cycle.

Per a 2K producer, these issues and the lack of stability have been addressed. Let’s hope everything works as advertised and discussed. If so, the banner year for franchise modes will continue with the strongest iteration of MyNBA.
