Advance apologies, but this is a mini-rant about the BBC.

This weekend, they seemed to do everything possible to annoy me. I'm still pretty steamed that they voluntarily gave up half the rights to Formula 1 races to Sky, but in a spirit of forgiveness was looking forward to watching the last race of the season on the Beeb. I duly set up my PVR to record and went about my business. However, when I came to watch it, I found that the BBC "planners" had made a last-minute change and moved the race coverage from BBC1 to BBC2 so my pre-set recording failed (this was so the Davis Cup tennis could be on BBC1 instead of BBC2 - does it really matter?). By the time I noticed the lack of recording, the race was half way through.

Oh heck I thought, how unfortunate. But all was not lost, I could give the BBC a chance to justify their compulsory fee by trying out the iPlayer on my brand new Amazon Fire Stick (an excellent device - buy one). I quickly brought up the BBC software, located the programme and was offered the choice of "Watch Live" or "Watch from Start". I didn't really want either, but the best option seemed to be to go back to the Start and then wind forward to the actual race which begins about an hour in. However, when the programme started, there was no option to wind forward! This made no sense so I let the programme run while I thought about it. After about 15 minutes, I decided (not entirely logically) it had to be glitch as no-one would do that on purpose, and so tried again. This was a mistake - I had to go back to the beginning. After two or three tries, I determined that the only solution was to go and do something else for 75 minutes while the iPlayer trundled through to the point I wanted to watch.

Why BBC, why? On my PC I can "Watch from Start" and then wind forward, so it presumably can't be a licensing issue. Once the programme had finished, I could watch via the iPlayer on Fire Stick and wind forwards and backwards to my heart's content so presumably not a technical issue either.

Hopefully this is temporary and the iPlayer on Fire Stick will eventually be fully-featured. The parts of iPlayer that do work, work very well and it's by far the best of the catch-up offerings. I just wish that the BBC would sometimes think about the customer experience. We may be a captive audience, but we're still an audience.

This is a wonderful development but is mean spirited, hence not more stars. I downloaded several episodes of a serial (which takes effort) but they had time expired before I could watch them and had disappeared. Also,it would be technically perfectly possible for the BBC to develop a system by which licence payers could have access to iPlayer via a password when overseas, but they choose not to. Indeed, they go to great lengths to prevent anyone getting access. I doubt if most people like me who have paid for the BBC all their lives would have any objection if people in other countries saw some programmes.
